The Women at Point Sur (1927)

This is Jeffers at his most ambitious. Jeffers’ magnum opus, The Women at Point Sur, which the poet deemed the Faust of his generation, was disliked by critics and readers alike. Jeffers later conceded that it had “grave faults,” but insisted that it was his “most inclusive, and poetically the most intense” poem. Apology for Bad Dreams, published in the preceding year, may have represented the high water mark in Jeffers’ skill as a poet.
