| Christy, like all her siblings, was born and raised in Glengarry County, Ontario to age 9 when her mother died, then her father moved with his younger children to Antigonish County, Nova Scotia (where her father remarried), and then they moved to Beaver Dam, Wisconsin in October, 1845. There was no reference to "Ontario" in the family record because there was no "Ontario" before 1867. Glengarry was then within "Upper Canada," also known as "Canada West" or "CW" in the 1850 Census of Beaver Dam, Dodge Co., WI. On that page, John Cameron is listed as born in "CW," whereas those born in Nova Scotia are listed as born in "NS". Unfortunately, his sister Calista is listed as born in "NS" in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, which appears to be inaccurate. However, by 1870 she is listed as born in "CW." The 1900 census corroborated our family record (and the cemetery record) of Christy's birthdate by reporting that she was born in March 1831. Spellings in the census: Clistie (1850), Christa (1860), Christy (1865, 1900, 1910), Christie (1870), and Crestia (1880). She was probably of pure Scottish descent. She reportedly never spoke English until she was 16 years old when they left Canada and came by boat to Wisconsin (1845-47). | ||||||||||||||
