| Notes for Harvey Henry "Dick" Johnston | ||||||||||||
| [Harvey] Henry Johnston was one of the signers of the petition to organize Woodside Township in Otter Tail County, Minnesota in late 1876. He and his wife Eleanor may have been in Otter Tail County as early as 1868, when they probably married (he was most likely 17 years old), but even if they did they were hardly trail blazers. The 1860 Federal census lists 94 households in the county already. Townships began to organize in the county in 1868. ... Cora (Johnston) Sjostrand told me that his name was "Richard Johnston". Clarence Johnston's report says that he was familiarly called "Dick", but that his name was "Harvey Henry". ... Clarence Johnston says that Eleanor and her mother died on a wagon train in Kansas while returning to Minnesota in 1891. ... We have a copy of Harvey Henry Johnston's death certificate. It says that he was living in Lancaster, MN, and was married to Ivy Johnston. He had lived in Lancaster for 8 years. Had he come from Otter Tail County, or possibly Luverne? He was born Feb 8, 1851 in Wisconsin, and died April 1, 1927 -- 76 years old. He was a farmer. His father was William Johnston, and his mother Christy Cameron. His mother was born in Canada. ... Toni wrote that he died on August 1. This was probably an error. ... The photo of Harvey Henry and Eleanor Quinette is probably a photo of Harvey Henry and Ivy Elvira Osborn, his second wife. He looks too old in the photo to be 40. | ||||||||||||

| "I wish I knew more about (my) grandparents. Her second marriage was a disappointment I'm sure. My father should never É(have been a) father. Wish I could tell you more about Frank's father. His stepfather wasn't good to him." - Cora Moran "Johnston was a drinker and cruel to Frank, who had to go to the saloon and help him home at night." "Dad did tell us that they had no fancy food while growing up, buying hog's heads for $.25 apiece and how much good meat could be found on one. He had a 4th grade education and got by with Mother's help." - Ruth (Barrett) Scott | ||||||||||||

| Guessing that Mattie and Paul were the oldest, the oldest between them may have been about 4 years older than Howard (b. 1903). If Dick and Ivy were married two years earlier, they would have been married around 1897, when Ivy turned 21.
