Notes for DeLace Johnston
Was his grandmother a French Canadian, as Mom recollects? His grandmother, Clarinda Quenett, was born in New York State, and so were Clarinda's parents.

Cora wrote that DeLace was born in 1880. This is fairly close to the specific date provided by his birth cert (Sep 23, 1879), but strangely innacurate.

We have a copy of his birth cert. It says that his birth name was DeLacy, and that his mother 'Elenor' was born in New York.

DeLace's mother, and perhaps her mother, died when he was about 10 years old (1891), on a wagon train in Kansas, while returning to Minnesota. I'm not sure about his maternal grandmother because she stayed in Houston, MN and remarried. We have no evidence of Clarinda following Harvey & Eleanor to Otter Tail County, so why would she follow them to Kansas?

It appears that DeLace never met any of his grandparents, with the possible exception of Clarinda, but even then she may have passed away at the same time as DeLace's mother Eleanor, when DeLace was only 10 years old. Only his father outlived DeLace's childhood. Harvey lived to age 76 - over two years into John and Cora's marriage.

DeLace, Elva, and their daughter Cora moved to South Dakota between Spring 1905 and December 1906. They appear to have first settled in Blunt.

DeLace acquired 160 acres near Hayes (twp 4N/26E sec 11), Stanley County, South Dakota in December 1909. We couldn't find them near Hayes or anywhere in Hughes County in the 1910 census. The railroad bettween Gettysburg and Blunt was completed in 1910. Did Delace work on that project?

By June 1911 (a bad drought year), the Johnstons were in Sully County. They were residing in Pierre by 1913. Grandma Cora said they moved around several times.
Misc. Notes
Directions to 1909 Delace Johnston land: From Hayes, Stanley Co., SD, drive East 2 mi., then turn right (south) and follow road S/SE about 4 mi. Should still be on former Johnston land where the road ends.
Notes for DeLace & Elva (Family)
They moved from Lancaster, MN to Montana in 1930, or possibly early 1931.
They moved to Bellingham, WA in 1939. Clarence followed them the following winter.
Misc. Notes
We have a copy of their marriage certificate.
