| Notes for Moses Sweet | ||||||||||||||||||||
| We're guessing that Moses' mother was a child of Scottish-American Loyalists and his father was English. All census records indicate that Moses was born in Canada. The 1880 census indicates that his parents were born in Massachusetts, whereas census records on Wait Sweet indicate that he was born either in Canada or Vermont. Arrived in what would become Linn Grove in 1866, and built a lumber mill, which was the first business whereupon Linn Grove would be founded. According to census records, he was a farmer through 1870. 1880 Federal Census says Moses ran a "grist mill". In Barnes, Buena Vista County with Nancy in 1885. Reported to have died in a cabin west of Sioux Rapids, ca. 1889. Perhaps he was living with his son John (and Marietta and Elva) at the time. | ||||||||||||||||||||

| "There is little doubt that Sweet contributed more to the early development of Linn Grove than any other person." | ||||||||||||||||||||

| Frank White was a brother-in-law of Moses or John (John was more likely, as Moses' kids were accounted for. George was too young): WHITE, Frank D. Frank White (b 1856 - d 1934). Operated a dry goods and grocery store (Lot EC) in Linn Grove (1912-1914). He started his business in Sioux Rapids, IA ca 1881. Married Aura Sweet (b 1858 - d 1942). She was a member of P.E.O. Both are buried in Lone Tree Cemetery, Sioux Rapids, IA. We have no other record of an Aura Sweet, but she must have been related. P.E.O. is a sisterhood based in Des Moines, Iowa: http://peointernational.org/ Frank may have been a son of Billy White: "Picture 9- Billy White a dear friend that was killed at the battle of Bull Run 1849 he looks to be about 20." | ||||||||||||||||||||
