| Notes for Michael "Mike" Patrick Donlin | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| We don't know for sure in which year Michael was born, but 1837 seems likely: - his Le Mars Globe-Post obit says Sep 29 1837. - the Donlin family Bible says Sep 22 1837. - the cert of his first marriage implies 1838. - The 1870 census implies 1837 (age 32). - The 1885 census implies 1838 (age 46). - The 1900 census says Sep 1839 (age 60). - The 1910 census mplies 1840 (age 69). - His grave record says he died at age 82, so he would have been born in 1836. ... he was probably born in 1838 (the range is 1836-40). We don't know in which year Michael came to America: - his obit says early Fall 1857. - The 1900 census says 1861. - The 1910 census says 1861 or 1865. ... he probably arrived in 1861. Michael was a night watchman (and apparently a laborer) at the Springfield Armory during the Civil War. It is presumed that he did so for the duration of the war, and he and Bridget and son James left for Wisconsin soon thereafter. The Donlin Family Bible states that the Donlins arrived at their destination in Iowa on 29 October 1879. The departure date is indicated, but it is unclear; perhaps 2 September. Michael died during the height of the Spanish Influenza epidemic, which peaked in October 1918. Claire Sweeney says that he didn't die from the flu, but that Gene caught the flu in Iowa while buring his father, and by the time he got back to Hand County the flu was all over. | ||||||||||||||||||||||

| In the 1885 census, "Michael Donlan" was reported to have turned 46 in [Sept] 1884, so he would have been born in 1838. The 1900 census states that "Michael Donlin" was born in September 1839. In the 1910 census, he was reported to be 69, indicating that he was born in [Sept] 1840. It seems reasonable to conclude that Michael may have been born in September 1839 – two years later than his obituary indicates. However, the 1870 census indicates that he was born in 1837. Michael's obituary says that he immigrated in Autumn 1857, but the census record points to 1861. This makes sense, because the obituary says nothing about what he did before the Civil War. It might also explain why we couldn't find Michael in the 1860 census index. The 1900 census clearly reports that Michael immigrated in 1861. The 1910 census appears to report that Michael immigrated in 1865, but it's possible that it says 1861. The apparent '5' is not written as distinctly as other 5s throughout the same census page, or even within the same column. Perhaps a review of the microfilm will clarify the record. 1865 is impossible, as Michael was in the country in January 1862, and probably earlier. We have not found Michael in the 1860 census. | Note on the marriage of Bridget and Michael: "I believe that the marriage was at St. Michael's Cathedral (same as with Jeremiah in 1872). If I remember correctly, I saw a City Directory listing for Michael Donlon during the early 1860s working at the Springfield Armory." | ||||||||||||||||||||||

| By the time James was born (Nov 1862), Michael appears top have settled on the DONLIN spelling, though records showed much variance as late as 1885. It was DONLON in his first marriage cert (1862) It was DONLIN in the birth cert of James (1862). It was DONLIN in the birth cert of Alice (1864). It was DONNELLY in the 1870 census. It was DONELIN on Bridget's gravestone (1877). Michael Patrick's surname was listed as DONLAN in the marriage index, and on the certificate for his second marriage (1877). It was DONLIN on the triple gravestone (1882). It was DONLAN in the 1885 census. It was DONLIN in the 1900 and 1910 censuses. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
