| Notes for William H. Fulton | ||||||||||||
| William was perhaps adopted by neighbors of his family after his mother died in the mid-1830s. He appears to have been raised in Lawrence County, IN. Did William die on May 18 or May 10? His gravestone says May 18 (according to Ken Salkeld's records), but Ken Salkeld's 1994 file says May 10. Where did we get "Henry" for William's middle name? From Ken Salkeld? | ||||||||||||

| Vet of Civil War, survivor of Andersonville Prison. One William H Fulton enlisted 16 August 1862, Indiana (probably our man). The 81st Indiana Infantry was organized on August 29, 1862, so it appears that William would have been involved in the earliest actions taken by the 81st. Their first campaigns were in Kentucky (Oct 1862), then Tennessee (Nov 1862 - Sep 1863). Only defeat at Chickamauga, GA on Sep 19-20, 1863. This is probably where William was taken prisoner. | ||||||||||||

| "WHF's medical war record mentions that he had a tumor on his side caused from the rubbing of army backpacks, etc. He was treated during the war for that and he also mentioned it in later years. "He also mentions that he became sickly while a POW at Andersonville or Libby Prison. This seems to have haunted his health for the rest of his life also. But, I have found that many Civil War Veterans claimed disabilities in later life from things that took place in the Civil War...true or not." - Ken Salkeld | ||||||||||||
